| |  Dr. Dan-Bush Bhusumane was elected to the NBCC International Advisory Council in 2006. His relationship with NBCC began during the development of the Guidance Counselling and Youth Development Centre for Africa and the development of an African counselor certification program. Dr. Bhusumane is a Lecturer in the Counselor Education Section of the University of Botswana and is President of the African Association for Guidance and Counselling (AAGC). In addition, Dr. Bhusumane has been an Executive Council member of the International Association for Counselling (IAC). Dr. Bhusumane provides support to NBCC International’s projects and programs in Africa.
He has been actively involved in the training and supervision of counselors in Botswana. He has directly facilitated the development of counseling programs and activities for youth. He also has provided consultation to other groups on the establishment of programs and policy development. Dr. Bhusumane recently completed research examining the ways and extent to which counselors use indigenous cultural practices and structures. Dr. Bhusumane has authored two books for higher schools, co-authored one for junior schools, and three for primary schools. He served in the Botswana Ministry of Education and contributed to the betterment of sub-Saharan Africa as a whole through projects such as the Guidance, Counselling, and Youth Development Centre for Africa in Malawi. His research interests include the challenges faced by counselors in Africa and continued exploration of the use of indigenous practices and knowledge in guidance and counseling in Africa.
Dr. Bhusumane completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Botswana. He completed his master’s at the University of Alberta in Canada and his Ph.D. in counselor education and supervision at Duquesne University in the United States. He was born and raised in Siviva Villige in Botswana, but works in Gaborone City. He speaks five languages fluently (English, Kalanga, Setswana, Ndebele, and Zulu) with partial command of seven others. He has traveled around the world extensively and credits his travel experiences with providing considerable insight into issues and challenges in counseling today. In his free time, Dr. Bhusumane enjoys listening to traditional music from different countries, enjoys teaching choral music, and singing. |
