Dr. Clawson first joined NBCC staff as Executive Director in 1989. As President and CEO, a position he assumed in 2005, Dr. Clawson coordinates the activities of all NBCC and NBCC International Permanent Staff. Additionally, he serves as the liaison between Staff and the Board of Directors, which defines NBCC activities and initiatives. During his tenure as the senior staff person, NBCC has moved from the Washington, D.C. area, expanded its influence in counseling in the United States and abroad, has remained fiscally sound as a not-for-profit organization, has recently created the NBCC International division, and has maintained strong relationships with other national and international organizations.
Prior to joining NBCC, Dr. Clawson held the position of Associate Professor and department chair with the Boston University Overseas Counseling Program in
Heidelberg,
West Germany. He resided in
Germany from 1981-1989 directing graduate degree programs in five European countries. He holds a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) credential issued by the state of North Carolina. He is a past president of the National Organization for Competency Assurance (NOCA) and a past Chair of the National Commission for Certifying Agencies. Dr. Clawson serves on the Board of The Center for Quality Assurance in International Education (CQAIE), as well as local education boards. He was a member of The College of William and Mary School of Education Development Board (1999-2005).
Dr. Clawson holds a B.S. degree from
West Virginia
University and three advanced degrees in counseling, including a Doctor of Education degree (Ed.D.) in counseling from the
College of
William and Mary in
Williamsburg,
Virginia. He is widely traveled and has consulted with such diverse groups as Radio Free Europe, the United Nations Educational, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the African Association of Guidance and Counselling (AAGC) and the Abraham Lincoln American school in Taiwan.
