International Counsellor-in-Residence (CIR)

A one-year appointment as a NBCC employee is offered to a distinguished leader in a non-U.S. counseling organization. During the period, the CIR and NBCC International staff exchange information related to counseling practice and professionalization in each respective nation. The CIR gains first-hand knowledge about how counselor credentialing mechanisms have been implemented in the U.S. and elsewhere as well as the strengths and challenges of various credentialing strategies.
In addition to engaging in information exchange with NBCC International staff, CIRs engage in scholarly activity to advance awareness of counseling practice in their home country, through conference presentations, university lectures, or scholarly publications. CIRs are provided support from NBCC-I staff in these endeavors.
Our first CIR was Dr. Andreea Szilagyi (pictured) from Romania. She is widely recognized as one of the first counselor educators in Eastern Europe and helped establish the first counseling master's program in Romania.
CIR Program Goals
The CIR will:
- engage in a dialogue related to the professionalization of counseling.
- engage in a dialogue related to the granting of privileges to practice professional counseling.
- participate in a global network of counselor educators dedicated to providing support to one another in the professionalization of counseling around the world.
